Although I haven't got full blown dementia, as yet, I have noticed over the last few years just how much my short-term memory has deteriorated and my long-term memory has become as full of holes as a colander. I glance at diaries from my youth, and read of people I was close to at one time who I cannot even remember.

These gaps in my memory are especially noticeable with books. The genesis of this song came to me one day when I was glancing along the book shelves of my prized collection and I realised with a shock that I couldn't remember the first thing about half of them and even those whose plots rang distant bells, were fuzzy when it came to details such as characters' names, etc. Once I hit on the central pun of "I'm Losing the Plot" - the rest of the lyrics fell into place.

I loved to have all my old books surrounding me
Memories of friends who had been good to me.
But now as time begins to fossilise my brain,
They’re reduced to strangers that I once met on a train

Where are all the quotes, I can’t recall today?

Old age is burning books out of my memory.

Now my library’s largely titles sitting on a shelf.
